A gene is a part of a chromosome (also known as a DNA molecule) that can be “expressed” or “turned on” or “turned off”. When a gene is turned on or turned off, an organism exhibits a trait, such as hair color or the ability to digest a type or food, etc. Whether a gene is turned on or turned off (expressed) can be measured in the laboratory. Diseases such as cancer can cause genes to be over or under expressed relative to the normal condition. BioTime’s subsidiary Oncocyte Corporation is using such gene expression in diagnostic products for the detection of different types of cancer.
