Lipoatrophy

Lipoatrophy is the loss of fat tissue, often in a specific localized area of the body. Lipoatropy can be caused by several factors, including loss of fat in the face, arms, legs and butt from the effects of anti-retroviral drugs used to fight HIV or from diabetes. BioTime’s Renevia® product is in clinical trials focused on reducing HIV-related facial lipoatrophy. Renevia combines its clinical grade HyStem® hydrogels with the patient’s own stem cells in a way that allows the stem cells to be directly applied to the facial area where the lipoatrophy appears with a goal of the stem cells producing fat to alleviate the lipoatrophy.
